American Addiction Centers Want You to Know About Blackout Driving

This year, the American Addiction Centers conducted some research surveys on blackout driving. The results of the survey were alarming because of the amount of people driving in a blackout state of mind. People are only aware they are blackout driving after they have done it. People who have been blackout driving know that they got themselves home safe and sound, but they don’t know how they did it. What is blackout driving?

Blackout driving means you can’t member what happened, like your driving to work. You know you climbed into your car, but you don’t member the trip. It is like you stepped into your car and a second later you are pulling into your parking spot. Some people who are intoxicated can somehow get into their car, navigate down their driveway, and later drive home.

During a blackout, the neurons in the hippocampus that produce long-term memory, are shut off. It is a disconnection between your long-term and short-term memory. While the short-term memory might be working fine, the long-term memory is not. It is possible to remember some things from the short-term memory.

Blackout sessions can also cause inappropriate behaviors that include unwanted sexual intercourse, theft, drug use, rape, beating, and suicide.

People in a blackout state have impaired vision, can hardly walk, have impaired jugment, and can barely stand. It is hard to believe someone in this impaired state can drive themselves home. The AAC survey proves otherwise.

There 600 men and women who participated in the survey. Of those 600 patricpants, 47 percent admitted they binge drink on July 4. The most revealing part of the survey was 36 percent participants have driven during a blackout. There were 10 percent of the participants who were charged with DUIs. In the survey, 26 percent said that ride share apps did not prevent them from driving drunk. After five or six beers, 14 percent participants felt alright to drive. After drinking five to six glasses of wine, 10 percent of the participants believed they were able to drive. Half of the participant surveyed have ridden in cars with a drunk drivers.

People who have blackouts don’t drink enough water during alcohol consumption, drink too quickly, mix drugs with alcohol, or drink on an empty stomach. Having a blackout after drinking alcohol does not mean you are an alcoholic.

The AAC can help drivers learn how many drinks, based on their height and weight, they can consume before there are problems. The AAC has a brochure with a chart that will tell you how long you have to wait, after you drink, before you can drive a vehicles or operate machinery.
